Providing Tree Services to Covington Residents Since 2001
Covington sits at the edge of the Cascade foothills, where big second-growth Douglas fir, western red cedar, and bigleaf maple crowd right up against neighborhoods like Timberlane, Jenkins Creek, and the properties ringing Lake Sawyer. That mix of mature native trees next to houses, driveways, and power lines is exactly the kind of terrain we’ve worked since 2001. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources notes that shallow-rooted species like western red cedar and Douglas fir are especially vulnerable to windthrow during the saturated soil conditions common in Pacific Northwest winter storms. Whether you’ve got a fir leaning toward the roofline after a storm or you’re just due for annual trimming, our crews know Covington’s lots, soil, and tree stock.

Covington's Tree Removal Rules β What Property Owners Should Know
Covington regulates tree removal more closely than some neighboring cities. Here’s the short version:
- Permits are required for removing “significant” trees under Covington Municipal Code (CMC) 18.45, unless the removal qualifies for an exemption.
- Common exemptions include: at-risk/hazard trees confirmed by a qualified arborist, trees within 10 feet of a building that will remain standing, invasive or nuisance species, and β on smaller lots (β€7,200 sq ft) β up to three trees (six over 36 months) without a permit.
- Emergency removals of a genuinely at-risk tree can happen without a permit first, but the removal must be reported to the City within 21 days.
- Replacement requirements apply to most permitted removals β generally one new tree per significant tree removed, at ratios set by trunk size and species.
- Minor vs. major permits depend on lot size: under one acre uses the Minor Tree Removal Permit; over one acre requires the Major Tree Clearing Permit, filed with the City’s Permit Services department.
We’re familiar with this ordinance because we work in Covington regularly. When we come out for an estimate, we’ll tell you plainly whether your situation likely needs a permit, qualifies for an exemption, or is an emergency case β so you’re not guessing or risking a violation.
